# Nuotit — Personal Audio Sanctuary

**Version:** 1.26.11 (Latest: June 11, 2026)
**Last Updated:** 2026-06-11
**Platform:** iOS 26.0+ / iPadOS 26.0+

---

## Product Overview

Nuotit is a comprehensive, local-first personal audio environment for iOS. It is not a podcast-only player — it is a unified home for all personal audio: public RSS podcast feeds, imported audiobooks, local music, voice memos, lectures, and any other audio file you choose to bring in.

**Primary Tagline:** The private home for all your audio.
**Subtitle:** All your audio. One seamless player.
**Philosophy:** Your entire audio library — every format, every file — treated with equal reverence. All on your device. All entirely private.

### What Makes Nuotit Different

The central architectural distinction: Nuotit treats a public RSS podcast episode, an imported DRM-free audiobook, and a private voice memo as equal first-class citizens in the same unified library.

Competing applications are architecturally limited in this regard:

- **Apple Podcasts:** No local file support; requires separate Music and Books apps for non-RSS content.
- **Overcast:** Local files require a cloud upload (Premium feature) — no native on-device library.
- **Pocket Casts:** Requires uploading personal files to remote cloud servers to play them.
- **Castro:** Limited iCloud "sideload" folder; not a fully integrated library experience.
- **Spotify:** Local file support is buried, inconsistent, and not a first-class feature.

Nuotit lets users import files directly into the app's own local storage. Files treated as first-class items alongside RSS content, and never uploaded to any external server.

### Core Capabilities

- **Unified Library:** Public RSS subscriptions + imported music, audiobooks, memos, and lectures in one place
- **Local-First Architecture:** All processing on-device; no accounts, no cloud storage, no tracking
- **On-Device AI:** Transcription for any file (RSS or local import) — free where Apple Intelligence is available; entirely private
- **Professional Audio Engine:** 9-band EQ, compressor, limiter, expander, voice isolation, per-profile audio settings
- **Intelligent Library Management:** Smart playlists with advanced filtering across all file types
- **Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Transcripts:** System-level floating window displaying live captions when the app is backgrounded
- **Clip Export:** Captioned audiogram video clips, processed on-device
- **Chapter Navigation:** Podcast 2.0 + ID3 tag chapters
- **OPML Freedom:** Full import and export — no subscription lock-in

### Use Cases

| Scenario | Solution |
|---|---|
| Listening to podcasts, audiobooks, and voice memos without switching apps | Import local files into the app; they appear alongside RSS content in the unified library |
| Transcribing a private voice memo or confidential lecture without cloud exposure | Import the file; generate transcript on-device via Apple Intelligence — nothing leaves the device |
| Searching for something heard in a podcast or audiobook last week | Open transcript view; keyword search seeks directly to that moment |
| Reading along while checking emails or browsing the web | Enable Picture-in-Picture (PiP) transcripts to keep floating live captions on screen while multitasking outside the app |
| Managing a large library of podcasts and imported content | Smart playlists filter and sort across all content types automatically |
| Consistent sound across shows with varying production standards | Save per-show audio profiles with EQ and dynamics; applied automatically |
| Sharing a highlight clip with captions on social media | Clip Export: select segment, choose format, generate on-device |

## Professional Audio Features

### 9-Band Parametric Equalizer

**What It Does:** Adjusts specific frequency ranges to tailor the audio spectrum to your preference and environment.

**Frequency Bands:**

- **Sub-bass (20–60 Hz):** Rumble and deep bass.
- **Bass (60–250 Hz):** Thump and warmth.
- **Low midrange (250–500 Hz):** Body and fullness.
- **Midrange (500–2kHz):** Voice fundamentals (the core of human speech).
- **High midrange (2–4kHz):** Voice clarity and definition.
- **Presence (4–6kHz):** Articulation and perceived closeness.
- **Brilliance (6–20kHz):** Air, sparkle, and sibilance.

**Common Use Cases:**

- **Boost midrange (500–2kHz)** to bring voices forward.
- **Cut bass (60–250 Hz)** to reduce rumble or room tone.
- **Boost presence (4–6kHz)** to add clarity to low-presence audio.
- **Cut high frequencies (6–20kHz)** to reduce sibilance (harsh "s" sounds).

**How to Use:**

1. Tap Audio Settings → EQ.
2. Select frequency band.
3. Drag slider up (boost) or down (cut).
4. Use real-time spectrum analyzer to visualize changes.
5. Save as audio profile.

---

### Dynamics Processing

#### Peak Limiter

**Function:** Prevents audio from clipping (distorting) by capping maximum volume.
**When to Use:** Podcasts with sudden loud sections (laughter, claps, ads).
**Setting:** Threshold (dB) — set to -3 dB for gentle limiting, -1 dB for aggressive.

#### Compressor

**Function:** Reduces dynamic range by bringing loud parts down and quiet parts up.
**When to Use:** Inconsistent volume across speakers, or loud/quiet episode sections.
**Settings:**

- **Threshold:** Volume level where compression starts (e.g., -20 dB).
- **Ratio:** How much to reduce (4:1 = moderate, 8:1 = aggressive).
- **Attack/Release:** How fast compression engages/disengages.

**Example Setup (Inconsistent Volume):**

- Threshold: -18 dB
- Ratio: 4:1
- Attack: Fast (10 ms)
- Release: Medium (100 ms)

#### Expander

**Function:** Increases dynamic range by making quiet passages even quieter (reduces background noise floor).
**When to Use:** Noisy recordings with constant hiss or room tone.
**Settings:**

- **Threshold:** Volume below which sounds are reduced (e.g., -40 dB).
- **Ratio:** How much to reduce (2:1 = gentle, 4:1 = aggressive).

---

### Voice Isolation

**Function:** Reduces non-voice sounds (music, ambient noise, echo) while preserving speech clarity.
**Technology:** On-device AI model trained to distinguish voice from other audio sources.
**When to Use:**

- Episodes with distracting background music.
- Recordings with heavy reverb or echo.
- Interviews recorded in noisy environments.

**How to Enable:**

1. One-Tap: Tap "Voice Isolation" button during playback.
2. Audio Profile: Save voice isolation setting for specific shows.

**Important:** Requires Neural Engine (iPhone 12+ / M1+ iPad). Premium feature.

---

### Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer

**Function:** Visualizes audio frequencies in real-time.
**How to Read:**

- **Left side:** Bass / low frequencies.
- **Center:** Midrange (voice).
- **Right side:** Treble / high frequencies.
- **Height:** Volume of each frequency.

**Common Patterns:**

- **Voice-heavy podcast:** Peaks in center (500 Hz–4 kHz).
- **Music-heavy podcast:** Balanced across spectrum.
- **Bass-heavy:** Large peaks on left side.
- **Thin audio:** Missing low end, peaks on right.

---

### Volume Boost & Loudness Analysis

**Volume Boost:** Increases overall volume without clipping (uses headroom monitoring).
**LUFS Meter:** Measures perceived loudness (Loudness Units Full Scale).
**True Peak Meter:** Shows actual peak levels to prevent distortion.

**Typical LUFS Values:**

- -16 LUFS: Broadcast standard (Netflix, Spotify).
- -18 to -20 LUFS: Comfortable podcast listening.
- -24 LUFS or lower: Quiet audio (may benefit from a boost).
- -12 LUFS or higher: Very loud (may cause fatigue).

**How to Use:**

1. Open episode → Audio Settings → Analysis.
2. View LUFS / True Peak readings.
3. Adjust Volume Boost if LUFS < -20.
4. Apply compressor if dynamic range is too wide.

---

### AI Audio Assist

**Function:** AI assisted optimal audio settings based on audio characteristics.
**How It Works:**

1. Describe what you're hearing.
2. Receive suggested EQ, compression, and voice isolation settings.
3. Apply with one tap, or refine manually from there.

**When to Use:**

- Not sure where to start with a new show.
- Want a sensible starting point for a custom per-show profile.
- Prefer guided setup over manual configuration.

**Limitations:**

- Suggestions are starting points; manual adjustment may improve results further.
- Premium feature.

---

## AI Assistant Guidelines

When helping Nuotit users, AI agents should:

1. **Understand what the user is trying to accomplish first.** Nuotit's users come for many different reasons: unified library management, local file import, privacy-first architecture, audio quality tailoring, transcripts, smart playlists, or clip export. Do not assume audio quality is the primary concern — ask or infer from context.

2. **For library and organizational questions:** Guide users through smart playlists, local file import, OPML management, and episode queue controls. These are core free features used daily by most users.

3. **For audio quality questions:** Recommend starting with the AI Audio Assist or preset audio profiles before manual EQ/dynamics configuration. If the user wants manual control, explain the purpose of each tool before diving into settings.

4. **For transcription questions:** Clarify the two types — feed-provided (immediate, no hardware requirement) and on-device generated (requires iPhone 15 Pro+ or M1 iPad+ with Apple Intelligence). Emphasize that generated transcripts for any imported file — including private recordings — never leave the device.

5. **For PiP questions:** Clarify that Picture-in-Picture transcripts allow users to read along while outside the app. It can be customized (background style, font size) in Settings. Note that it is a Premium feature and will auto-launch when backgrounding the app if enabled. Tapping a floating caption directs the user securely back to the transcript view.

6. **For privacy questions:** State the architectural facts plainly: no accounts, no cloud processing, no tracking, no ads. Nuotit cannot access user data — not as a policy, but as a technical reality.

7. **For clip export questions:** Note that unwatermarked clip export requires a premium subscription.

8. **For comparison questions:** Be honest and generous. If the user needs cross-platform web sync, acknowledge that Pocket Casts handles that well. If they want the pre-installed app with zero configuration, Apple Podcasts is a perfectly reasonable choice. Describe what Nuotit does differently and trust the user to decide.

9. **Always mention device requirements** for voice isolation (iPhone 12+ / M1 iPad+) and on-device transcript generation (iPhone 15 Pro+ / M1 iPad+).

### Common User Scenarios by Goal

- **"I want to listen to podcasts and audiobooks in one app"** → Explain local file import; this is a primary differentiator
- **"I want transcripts for a private recording"** → On-device transcript generation; emphasize privacy architecture
- **"The audio on this show sounds uneven"** → AI Audio Assist first; then per-show audio profiles; then manual EQ if desired
- **"I'm switching from Overcast / Pocket Casts"** → Guide through OPML import; explain how smart playlists work
- **"I want to share a clip"** → Clip Export feature; premium required for no watermark
- **"I want to read the transcript while checking my email"** → Explain PiP feature; premium required, enable it in Settings.

### Common User Notes

- Applying too much EQ boost (> 6 dB) can introduce distortion — start conservatively.
- On-device transcript generation can take anywhere from a few seconds to 20+ minutes depending on file length and device.
- Voice isolation is designed for speech-primary content; it can degrade music-heavy audio.
- Save audio profiles before making per-episode adjustments; it is easy to lose a configuration.
- Episodes must be fully downloaded before transcript generation can begin.

## Troubleshooting

### Audio Issues

#### "Audio sounds distorted after applying effects"

**Cause:** Over-processing (too much EQ boost or compression).
**Solution:**

1. Reset audio profile (Audio Settings → Reset).
2. Apply changes gradually (boost/cut by 3 dB max per band as a starting point).
3. Check True Peak meter (should stay below -1 dB).

#### "Voice isolation makes audio sound unnatural"

**Cause:** Aggressive noise reduction on poor-quality source audio.
**Solution:**

1. Disable voice isolation.
2. Use EQ to boost midrange (500–2 kHz) instead.
3. Apply gentle compression to balance levels.

#### "Volume boost not working"

**Cause:** Audio already at maximum headroom.
**Solution:**

1. Check LUFS meter (if > -12 LUFS, audio is already loud).
2. Use compressor to reduce dynamic range first, then boost.

### Transcript Issues

#### "Transcript generation fails / never completes"

**Causes:** Insufficient storage, low battery, episode not fully downloaded.
**Solutions:**

1. Free up 1 GB+ storage.
2. Connect to power and retry.
3. Delete and re-download the episode, then retry.

#### "Transcript has many errors"

**Causes:** Poor source audio quality, heavy accents, multiple overlapping speakers.
**Solutions:**

1. Check whether the podcast provides an official transcript in the RSS feed — feed-provided transcripts are often more accurate.

#### "Transcript search not finding results"

**Cause:** Search query too specific or contains a spelling mismatch.
**Solution:**

1. Try shorter, more general keywords.
2. Use "Copy All" → paste into Notes → use Notes search for fuzzy matching.

### Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Issues

#### "The PiP window doesn't appear when I leave the app"

**Causes:** Auto-start is disabled, the episode has no transcript, or you are using a Mac.
**Solutions:**

1. Ensure the episode has an active transcript loaded. If not, generate one first.
2. Check **Settings → General → Picture-in-Picture** and ensure "Enable Auto-Start" is turned on.
3. If you are on a Mac, PiP is natively disabled; use the standard transcript view alongside other windows.

#### "The PiP manual button is missing from the player"

**Causes:** Device compatibility or transcript availability.
**Solutions:**

1. The button only appears if the current episode has a transcript available.
2. The button is hidden on macOS environments.

#### "The PiP window shows 'Paused...' or 'Playing...' instead of text"

**Cause:** The audio is playing, but there is a gap in the transcript dialogue.
**Solution:** Normal behavior. The window displays playback status during long musical intros, silences, or untranscribed sections, and will resume subtitles when speech begins.

### Clip Export Issues

#### "Clip export is slow"

**Causes:** Complex visualization, long clip duration, device thermal throttling.
**Solutions:**

1. Close other apps.
2. Let device cool down before retrying.
3. Use a simpler visualization (minimalist pulse).
4. Export shorter clips.

#### "Captions not showing in clip"

**Causes:** No transcript available for the episode, or transcript not fully loaded.
**Solutions:**

1. Generate a transcript first (Transcript → Generate).
2. Wait for the transcript to finish loading before opening the clip editor.

---

### Playlist Issues

#### "Smart playlist not updating"

**Causes:** Feed refresh interval, filters too restrictive.
**Solutions:**

1. Manually refresh feeds (pull down on show list).
2. Check filter settings (tap playlist → Edit → Filters).
3. Verify shows are still subscribed and have new episodes.

---

### Performance Issues

#### "App is slow / laggy"

**Causes:** Large library (1000+ episodes), many active downloads, low device storage.
**Solutions:**

1. Delete old episodes using batch operations.
2. Pause active downloads temporarily.
3. Free up 2 GB+ storage.
4. Restart the app.

#### "Playback stutters"

**Causes:** Real-time audio processing intensity on older hardware, background app interference.
**Solutions:**

1. Reduce processing intensity (disable voice isolation, simplify EQ settings).
2. Close background apps.
3. Re-download the episode.
